Since you purchased this product,you areprobably interestedin conduct-
ing electronic commerce using yourweb site. To makeyour customersfeel
safe doing business with you over the web, your web server needs to be
secure. A secure server instructs any browser accessing your site to en-
crypt all the data sent back and forth. Encrypted data can’t be intercepted
andreadby athirdparty. Yourcustomers willfeelmorecomfortablewhen
making purchases from your site if they know that their transactions are
secure.
Secure servers aren’t only for electronic commerce. A secure server may
also be used to transmit sensitive datasuch as sales figures to sales people
on the road or to business partners over the Internet.
This chapter will show you how to create a key and a certificate request.
Then we’ll go through the process of getting a certificate signed by one of
two differentCertificate Authorities (CAs): VeriSign
(http://www.verisign.com)and Thawte(http://www.thawte.com).
Once you have a signed certificate, you’ll learn how to install it on your
secure web server.
